Who do you think wins?
LHW Champ Lyoto Machida (15-0) v. Mauricio Rua (18-3) Rua was recovering when he fought and barely beat an aged and gassed Mark Coleman. He looked better in fighting Chuck but Chuck is older and slower as well. In fighting Lyoto, he will be facing a fighter in his prime. Is Shogun up to the test? I don't think he's ready to face Lyoto. He has admitted having trouble finding someone to spar with that can emulate Lyoto and we haven't even seen Lyoto's ground game yet. I think Shogun will be agressive and Lyoto will love that. Lyoto wins by TKO in 2. Cain Velasquez (6-0) v. Ben Rothwell (30-6) Cain was able to take some of Kongo's punches and was able to get him on the ground but was unable to do anything with Kongo once he got him there. Rothwell is 25 pounds heavier (at the 265 limit and he's cutting 20 pounds to get there, will probably be around 270-275 at fight time) and has an enormous weight and power advantage that I think will give Cain his first loss. Rothwell by TKO in 2. Gleison Tibau (29-6) v. Josh Neer (25-8) Tibau by tapout in 2. Joe Stevenson (35-10) v. Spencer Fisher (24-4) I like Joe but Fisher is a tough test. Joe by decision. Anthony Johnson (7-2) v. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (11-3) Yoshida by decision. |

Shogun is a dangerous, but this is the Machida era-Shogun is going to have to catch
"The Dragon", which nobody's been able to do yet. Should be an awesome fight-don't bet on Shogun chasing Lyoto down like Thiago Sliva did. My pick: Machida Rothwell/Velazquez I see going to a decision. The size of Rothwell will show whether Cain needs to move to LHW or not. I Cain can't work his wrestling on Rothwell, it's not gonna work on Brock. I think Neer takes out Tibau. Tough guy, lots of fights under his belt. Should be a good fight. Last two fights are pick'ems, I'd bet on Stevenson and I think Yoshida (If he's the Judo dude I'm thinking of). |

Decent PPV.
Anthony Johnson should really be penalized for coming in 6 pounds over. He's already very big for his weight class as it is. The UFC needs to do something about all these fighters coming in over the limit. Enough of this catchweight crap. He definitely has standup skills and speed but they need to up the competition for him. Good win for Joe Daddy! Devastating elbows, no choice but to stop that match. Cain got another win BUT I still don't feel that he's shown that he can hang with the big boys. He has no stopping power and his ground and pound is relentless but still not very good. Kongo was a big test if he could take a punch and he showed he can take one (although I'd like to see if he could take more than one). With Kongo he showed he could beat a good standup fighter and with Rothwell he showed he could beat a big guy BUT the top guys play his game and are all world class at it and do it with much more power. He has to show that he can handle what the top guys bring. Nog and Mir are BJJ experts, while Lesnar and Carwin are big powerful wrestlers. Can Cain take down any of those guys? If he can, can he protect himself from the BJJ or from that 1 shot that Carwin or Lesnar can give and stop a fight? I'm not convinced yet that he is that guy. I don't feel he's earned a shot against any of those 4 yet. Machida looked off from the get go (sick?) and got a gift from the judges but Dana always says to not let the judges decide a fight for you. When it comes to a close fight, more times than not the Champ will get the nod from the judges. Shogun came in with a real good gameplan. One thing I think we learned from this fight though is that Machida can take a punch. I think Shogun showed a weakness in Machida's stance to leg kicks BUT if Machida is as good as I think he is and evolves as fast as I think he will then I think this is the last time we'll see that. I can't wait to see the rematch is what I'll say. |

The weight issue is perplexing-6 pounds over is unacceptable, especally if you assume he was probably even heavier at fight time.
The UFC needs same day weigh-ins. Tibau looked huge also. I agree on Cain, but think he has a huge future if he can get down to LHW-or if a superheavyweight division is created , which I doubt they'll do due to the lack of capable fighters at that size. But look at it this way-Velazquez handled Rothwell much easier than Arlovski did, which says a lot about the UFC's up and coming heavies-and a lot about why Fedor doesn't want to come to the UFC. I want to see more of Todd Duffee(?)-that kid looked downright SCARY. |

I had the fight a draw. Rua didn't push the action and I had the 1st rd even. Rua gave everyone the blue print on how to solve Machida. The karate stance is a bulls eye for leg kicks.
Velazquez passed his 1st major test. Look forward to seeing him again. If Johnson can make 170 he can be a beast! |
