I am inclined to feel that Marv is one of the best play-by-play broadcasters of his time, for his smooth inflection in relaying the pulse of the game to us, to his love of the sport. However, at times I find him unlistenable. Some time around the mid-70's, he started to become more obsessed with banter than the game itself. I am amazed that some of his analysists have not struck back with some quite easy barbs of their own (given his "embarassing" public persona), although I'm sure they have been strictly warned by the suits in charge.
Anyway, just curious how my fellow Net fans feel about Ian Eagle's plight in this. Do you all feel he got a raw deal? Is he really that entrenched as the voice of the Nets that even Marv should not replace him?
Ian Eagle ROCKS!! I think he is one of the BEST voices on TV! I certainly hope he is not gone from the Nets completely. Is he? I'm not a very big Marv fan. Is'nt he a biter anyways?!!!
From what I read, Eagle will be doing about 30 games next season since Marv has other commitments with TBS, etc. I really think that Ratner pushed for Marv b/c of his Brooklyn roots and how it figures in the team's planned move there.
I have my opinions on Marv Albert, and they are probably not as glowing as those some fans may hold. But, he is a great announcer. The problem is, he was a great KNICK announcer. That is not intended to diss the Knicks, but Marv is synonymus with them. Ian Eagle is becoming synonymus with the Nets. And he is a pretty damn good announcer himself. I would prefer to continue to hear Eagle as the regular announcer with Spero Dedes spelling him about 10-15 times a year.
So it will be nice to hear Eagle 30 times next year if this is true. However, there is always the possibility that Eagle could be lured elsewhere for a full-time opportunity. I hope he stays, but he should do what's best for him.
