Jeff won't let him. Jeff apparently needs to have a round robin consensus from his management team to decide yea or nea on FA #1 before working on FA #2 and so on, as the article suggests. IMO, this is a Jeff "thing", not Omar's.

I just figured it out.
I had to go back to my childhood Yankee roots, but then it became oh-so-obvious.
Here's how it goes.
Yogi was a catcher.
Yogi was also a leftfielder.
Soooooo.....
Mets stock up on catchers who double as outfielders. Even if Beltran doesn't get back before mid-September, they're covered.
So, let's see
outfielders : Pagan, Beltran, Bay, Francoeur, Thole, Santos, Blanco, Barajas, Matthews, Jr.

Yep, that sounds about right.
Maybe they put Beltran at first, just like the Yankees did with Mickey back in the day.

I just never realized how awesomely clever the Mets really are.

Silly me.

I agree, this is Jeff exercising authority as only Jeff knows how to do. Omar has many shortcomings, but Jeff is hopelessly incompetent and doesn't seem to know it. Jeff doesn't understand anything about business, marketing, or management. Never mind baseball. If he wasn't Fred's idiot son, Jeff wouldn't even be able to hold down as job as a dishwasher. No offense to the dishwashers out there.

I couldn't agree more with your assessment of Little Lord Forntleroy(aka Jeffrey Wilpon). If it wasn't for the gross incompetence of Omar Minaya as an executive however,Sonny Boy wouldn't have the avenue available that he has taken.
