As much fun as it is to hear and read all these rumors, does anyone else just want it to pass already? The press comes up with all these rumors where you think it's too good to be true, and some which you want to scream because it's so bad. And I KNOW as soon as the Mets make a deal, there will be a bunch of fans blasting the deal no matter what it is, as well as other praising it like it was the best deal in the history of baseball.
Not to mention, with EVERY LOSS and EVERY WIN the Mets have right now, people want to jump the gun on a deal and/or not make any deals.
I just want it to end so I can just watch the games and not deal with this stuff. Anyone else lol?
This is one of the funnest times of the year for me. What will they do, anything. Pitcher, hitter, bullpen? Give up Heilman, Pelfrey or Millage, bring back Zito or Williss. I love the rumors and the speculation.

It is fun. The problem is that while itgets closer, the fans can't control themselves. And this translates. Man, if they do badly in Atlanta, I don't even want to imagine how the fans will react and what they will want. And even Omar.
Honestly this is one of my favorite times of year as well. this and the off-season. i've always enjoyed the off-field action invovled with baseball, much more than any other sport.
It is interesting to think of the possibilities as the trading deadline approaches. I'm not sure what the Minaya is going to do, but I do know this. This team is a lot more fun to watch now, and is a whole lot more competitive now than it has been in many years. Whatever Omar does, he has my support. I will continue to be a Mets fan, as long a I live and will root for whatever players the roster has on it.
I enjoy the offseason guessing better. This time of year brings back nightmares or both recent vintage (Zambrano and Benson) and olden times (departure of Seaver). I always worry that some stupid kneejerk reaction will be made by the team in order to "win now". Remember Benson and Zambrano were the best that was out there that particular season so teams, especially ours overpay.
I think Omar see the forest between the trees,Red. Thank goodness,he evidently will not sacrifice success for the next dozen years at the expense of one possible WS appearance. Who knows? Maybe we have a hidden gem in Maine,Pelfrey will improve with each outing and Pedro will catch fire, leading us to the ultimate banner year in '06. With that being said,I will not be terribly disappointed if this is not to be our year, knowing that the future is bright. Rome wasn't and shouldn't have been built in a day. If it was it would have crumbled alot sooner. When you build with patience and care and refuse to short cut the process, the result is a building made to last.

I agree with Redraider. This time of year is fraught with danger, especially for the good teams that are trying to get "even better." It is at times like this that even smart people get caught up in the excitement of the moment, throw caution to the wind in the spirit of carpe diem, trade the future for the present, and more often than not live to regret their rash moves.

Lucky, that is an excellent post. I could not describe it better myself.
I am more open to making a deadline deal this year than last, since last year I did not feel this team had post season potential. This year, I feel we have WS potential, but maybe not winning it. I still do not want to give up any prime prospects, read: Milledge, Pelfrey, Humber...
Unless if it entails ONE of them in a package for the D-train (or Carlos Zambrano, although I do not know why the Cubs would make him available, despite some chatter).
The only thing that makes me roll my eyes about the trade deadline is that some people get so carried away with the concept that a contending team HAS to make a trade, that they lose sight of the fact that a trade should be made for only one reason... does it make the Mets a better team? If it doesn't, who says Omar HAS to make a trade?
Many years there seems to be that surprise young player who steps it up, and matures. John Maine's performance over the past couple of games has me thinking that the Mets may have found just that, and that he may be a very reliable top of the rotation type of pitcher for the next decade or so. The last 17 scoreless innings has shown me why he had such promise coming up. I hope the Mets keep him. We all know that Billy Beane likes Maine, and would want him in a Zito deal, but I'd rather the Mets didn't include him in any deal right now.

I agree that the future is bright, but I would be terribly disappointed. You cannot assume the future or take any year for granted. Ask the Cubs fans. I am now 46 years old. If I ever have to endure a Cubs-like World Series drought, then I probably have seen my last Mets World Series. God Forbid. To have the best team in the NL, and not make it to the series is something that I would always be terribly disappointed in every time it happens.
