from metsblog.com:

"In a report for Newsday, David Lennon says Daniel Murphy will work with Keith Hernandez on defense at first base this season.

However, Lennon also says prospect Ike Davis could push for the job at first base sooner rather than later this season.

…i’m looking forward to the results from Murphy after working with Mex…he was very helpful for Todd Zeile when the Mets transformed him into a first baseman back in 2000, and for the most part, was very effective there…i don’t see Davis making an appearance at the big league level until September, at the earliest…unless of course Murphy finds his way to the disabled list for a long duration…"

Gotta help Murf....and I am willing to bet that
Mex will also give Murf some batting tips....behind HoJo's back of course!!Whistle

way TO GO MEX!!

Mex has already indicated how much he thinks of the kid and his upside, both defensively and offensively. Perhaps he notices the same fire and determination in Dan that he saw in himself. If Keith sees it,who are we to argue? Should his power stroke emerge and poise at the plate return along with improvement around the bag, perhaps young Ike could yield us Brandon Phillips along with some arms.

Val Pascucci is a modern day Steve Bilko, who was the most feared HR hitter in the minor leagues for over a decade back in the '50's,but did next to nothing(With the exception of the first season of the LA Angels back in '61) once reaching the next level. I don't see this signing as anything more than giving the Bisons fans someone to get behind and possibly cheer about.

They shouldn't make the mistake of giving Murphy the job outright as they did last year in left. Competition is good for young players and Chris Carter should be in the mix. He has fabulous minor league numbers but has had little chance in the bigs. He says he's more comfortable in outfield than first, but given his bat and fabulous mental makeup, I hope Keith works with him as well. The knock on Chris is his D, but soo too, Murphy. I'm eager to see Carter play on both sides of the ball.

If this news was just published today, Metsblog/David Lennon are really late on this. During the 3-day mini camp, Murphy disclosed Keith would be working with him.

murphy may be bad at fielding but he has very good range at 1b, carter doesn't.

Carter definitely deserves a shot, but as the incumbant, who the organization believes in,Murph should have a step up on anyone in Camp from the outset. If he falters and Carter or any other surprises emerge all bets are off.

The basic problem with Dan had been his unfamilarity and footwork around the Bag and squaring himself in front of ground *****. Recently Marty Noble took Dan's range as a first baseman to task, blaming him for Castillo's perceived inability to cover ground. Quite frankly I never thought much of Noble's knowledge and opinions, and couldn't disagree with him more. Dan is actually quick to react and moves quite well to his right.

How do you know about Carter's range? Have you seen him play?

scouting report from a redsox fan.

if his defense wasnt't bad, why didn't the red sox call him up?? because they traded for kotchman because they needed a 1b who didn't **** at defense.

ahhhhh

Marty Noble's opinion typically doesn't command my respect either. Blaming one player for another's perceived weakness is rather lame.

During the 3-day mini-cap, Murphy said he didn't realize how much he needed to improve his footwork quickness until he began to train for such this offseason. So hopefully we see improvement there.

He also said he worked on speed - which I'm glad to hear and hope he meant base running and going after ***** in the air because when he resorts to running with short, choppy steps rather than what he was taught as outfielder - to lengthen his strides - he doesn't run very well and falls back into bad habits.

I think we'll see improved range from Castillo who said he would work very hard on it this offseason.

I just don't think he should be given the position outright. It's not like he starred there or had anything but a mediocre season. He got his chance there only because of Delgado injury.
