He has fabulous minor league numbers but has had little chance in the bigs. He says he's more comfortable in outfield than first, but given his bat and fabulous mental makeup, I hope Keith works with him as well. The knock on Chris is his D, but soo too, Murphy. I'm eager to see Carter play on both sides of the ball.

murphy may be bad at fielding but he has very good range at 1b, carter doesn't.

How do you know about Carter's range? Have you seen him play?

scouting report from a redsox fan.

if his defense wasnt't bad, why didn't the red sox call him up?? because they traded for kotchman because they needed a 1b who didn't **** at defense.

ahhhhh

I never said he was good there, but clearly you've never seen him play, have you?

No you haven't, yet feel compelled to specifically comment on his range. And your conclusion about his range in particular is based upon what? A Red Sox fan who saw him play. Where did this Red Sox fan see him play?

As far as the Red Sox trading for Kotchman's D, that's lame explanation for dissing Carter. The correlation doesn't mesh considering the circumstances of Kotchman's acquisition and who they traded for him.

So true. I love all these so-called experts who will comment on these minor league kids without ever having seen them. It's such garbage. My rule of thumb is if I didn't see it with my own eyes, I can't judge it.

Carter definitely deserves a shot, but as the incumbant, who the organization believes in,Murph should have a step up on anyone in Camp from the outset. If he falters and Carter or any other surprises emerge all bets are off.

I just don't think he should be given the position outright. It's not like he starred there or had anything but a mediocre season. He got his chance there only because of Delgado injury.
Dan had many good moments, especially when he began to exhibit more power and consistency in August and September. The Mets have invested quite abit of time into his development as a major leaguer and shouldn't stop now. Carter is a newbie,Tol,and MUST standout, while Murph struggles. I am sure the former will get his opportunities. After all is said and done,I think Dan will blossom this season.

I once knew a guy who knew this man who spoke to a mailman who used to stop in Star bucks who knows a taxi driver that got coffee there who drove past Fenway park and a Redsox fan told that guy He heard about Chris Carter and said He could be a good catcher. Oh wait that was Gary Carter 30 years ago never mind. Oops

I'm not sure I agree. I don't think you can run faster, but you can get quicker by better anticipation and a quicker first step.

Murphy, for example, could improve his range by better anticipation on where the ball will go based on what the pitch is and where the location is, but he won't become a faster baserunner.

Good points....you can also better yourself by knowing the pitch type and location that is coming as well as the better's tendencies ..
However,in order to achieve this, you must have pitchers that can put the ball near to the location that best works..as well as catchers
that know the weaknesses of the hitters and the strengths of the pitchers...One of the many small nuances of the game that make it the "ballet" it is.
Scary thoughts,huh?
