I wasn't going to post anything on this topic for awhile because there was no reason to believe anything had a chance to happen, despite a few days of murmuring on MLBtraderumors.com. That changed today:

Source

quote:
[Padres GM Kevin] Towers said he has heard from clubs interested in trading for ace pitcher Jake Peavy. “We're having talks,” he said.

The GM said he wouldn't be surprised if the Peavy talks heat up next month.

This coming a few days after Peavy's agent said :

quote:
Axelrod did not specifically mention the Yankees, but said, "Any kid, you’d imagine, always thinks about wearing the pinstripes some day. But it’d be a pretty significant move for him."

I, for one, hope this doesn't happen. Yes, Peavy would be great but a pitcher that has had that kind of success and is under a team-friendly contract for the next 4 years or so? The offer would probably have to be something like Cano, Hughes and Austin Jackson. The farm system is in pretty bad shape in terms of position players as it is. Sabathia just costs money, not prospects.

agreed....unless they trade for him and sign CC as well....then you'd be looking at quite a formidable rotation.....But I'd still e very careful....national league guys coming over to the american league east??? You can tack on at least 1 more run to that era.

I agree as well. AJ Burnett may seem the best option at this point and I'm not 100% sold on him either considering how injury prone he has been, it may be a (gulp) Pavano deal all over again.

I wouldn't sign Burnett...he only pitched lights out against the Yankees....His ERA was almost 2 runs higher against other teams....and yes....he is very injury prone< this wa shis first injury free season with the Blue Jays if I'm not mistaken.

Update

The Padres, as you might imagine, are asking for 2 young pitchers and a near-MLB ready center fielder.

quote:
If AL teams get involved, the Yankees might be a fit, although New York GM Brian Cashman has made it clear in the past that he wants to adhere to a path of player development. That stance could change if the Yankees have changed their internal evaluations of young p layers who struggled in 2008, such as Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera.

Who says lightning doesn't strike twice? This is frighteningly similar to the Santana talks of last season. A few key differences, though:

A) Santana had dominated his entire career in the AL, Peavy, the NL.
B) Santana-a lefty, Peavy--a righty
C) Peavy--pitches in one of the friendliest ballparks for pitchers, Santana--in the self-proclaimed "Homer Dome"

That's just off the top of my head.

Hughes, Kennedy and Cabrera for Peavy--yes or no?

If the Yankees trade for Peavy and signed Sabathia, next year's rotation could be:

Sabathia
Peavy
Wang
Pettitte
Joba

Of course, if that happens, the Yankees charter plane would have to be careful to avoid all those pigs that would be flying around.

IF it takes Hughes and Kennedy to get Peavy you have to make this deal....Peavy is only 27 and has a fairly managable contract....at least for the next two years until it balloons....It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility to overpay for Sabbathia and trade for Peavy at the same time......now that would be quite a formidable front 3 pitchers when you throw them in with Wang. Your number 4 would be Joba and even Coke if you want to convert him to a starter......They all throw alot of innings so there would be no need to spend money on middle relief....Mo is Mo and I Marte and Bruney are both solid ....I think it's feasable that the Yankees could very well wind up with Peavy and CC.....why not.....lets not forget that they have a ton of money coming off the payroll so they can retool.

Any trade for Peavy will take more then Hughes and Kennedy. I think Yankee fans need to get off of the Hughes and Kennedy for anybody trade scenario. Those guys lose credibility by the minute. Hughes just got bombed again by some 16 year olds in an Arizona fall league game. He stinks and is always injured. Kennedy has no value to any team at this point. I hope they get Peavy but think it takes more then those two bums to get him. Even if you through Melky in I would doubt they would make that trade. Melky also stinks. Fourth outfielder at best. If I'm the other team I don't trade an ace for two pitchers who couldn't win a single game between them and a fourth outfielder. Although they would probably make that trade if we were the Red Sox. Head Bang

Peavy reportedly gave the Astros a list of five NL teams that he would waive his no-trade clause to play with: the Braves (closest team to his home), the Astros (he's reportedly good friends with Roy Oswalt), the Dodgers, the Cubs and I forget who else. His agent said it would take "a lot of convincing" to get him to go to an AL team.

There's also speculation now that Boston could get in on this sweepstakes but the asking price might be two of their three pitching prospects (Clay Buccholz, Justin Masterson and Michael Bowden) and first base prospect Lars Anderson. The Red Sox weren't all that interested in parting with their top prospects last year for Johan Santana and that was with a much weaker free agent class in the starting pitching department. If they really want to add a starter, I see them more likely to hold onto their young players and join the bidding for Sabathia/Burnett/Sheets/Lowe.

Also, Padres GM said he's looking for "young, controllable pitching" and middle infielders. For the Yankees, that means Cano. No one else fits the criteria.

I don't think the Yankees are good match....they would most likely have to part with Joba.....They're not going to take Hughes and Kennedy......eventhough I still think Hughes has good stuff....if he can stay healthy he can get people out.

I think Hughes and Kennedy would get it done, provided it's with someone like Melky Cabrera and/or Robby Cano as the third player of the deal. I don't think teams are asking for Joba any more. I think they realize it's not going to happen.

You are crazy. Why would the Padres trade a former cy young winner who is under 30 for Hughes (injury prone and pitched to a 9era), Kennedy (just garbage), Melkey (demoted to AAA last year) and Cano (total head case)??? Keep dreaming. Maybe for Joba (mr DUI) and three other prospects.

Cano is not a "total head case". He had a "senior slump", if you will, but he's still got a world of talent. The guy hit .342 just two seasons ago and he's signed to a reasonable deal for the next 3 years or so. You're being overly negative. I would add that deal could top anything the Mets could throw out there.
