Pettitte Wants to Come Back

He wants to come back and it seems the Yankees want him back, albeit at a reduced price.

Pettitte Files For Free Agency

Just a formality, to keep his options open. He's a Type A. The Yankees will get two draft picks if he signs elsewhere but that's very unlikely.

Pettitte Doesn't Want to Take a Paycut

Don't know if I can really blame him--with all the ridiculous amounts that the Yankees are throwing around at other free agents.

quote:
As for Andy Pettitte Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina Mike Mussina , the Yankees remain interested in Pettitte, but aren't going to pay him the $16 million he earned last season. According to a Yankee source, Pettitte's agent, Randy Hendricks, doesn't want a pay cut for his 36-year-old client, who went 14-14 with a 4.54 ERA last season.

Now the Red Sox are expressing interest in Pettitte. Source

My opinion? It will be a smogless day in LA before we ever have to look at Pettitte in a Boston uni. No chance.

The Cardinals are also discussing Pettitte. I still think he'll end up back in Pinstripes but again, if he doesn't, since he wasn't offered arbitration, the Yankees will get nothing in compensation.

Cash has been e-mailing Randy Hendricks but no progress has been made.

From Vegas to Texas: Cash Flies to See Pettitte

Looks like he's going to offer him 1 year, $10 million and Pettitte needs to decided relatively quickly or else Cash is off to see Ben Sheets next.

C'mon, at least offer him 12 mil. All of a sudden money's tight in new york? The guy's been a great big game pitcher for us for over a decade. He's due for a bounce back year. If you can throw half of Fort Knox at CC, who doesn't even want to be here, certainly you can give Andy another mil.

At this point, this is overkill.

The Yankees should use their money to strengthen their team:

Save the $10 million on Pettitte.
My first choice is to trade Matsui. This may be difficult. The Yanks may need to eat some money. If not, then trade "high" on Nady and save another $4-$5 million he will get in arbitration. He is Boras client. He's gone after the year anyway (free agent). Either, way Swisher can move to either DH or RF.
Forget about Cameron and wasting another $10 million.

Now the Yanks would be able to go after Teixeira. This allows the Yanks to carry Gardner's bat in Center.

Starting 5:
Sabathia
Burnett
Wang
Chamberlain
Hughes or Aceves

C- Posada
1B - Teixeira
2B - Cano
SS - Jeter
3B - A-Rod
LF - Damon
CF - Gardner
RF - Nady or Swisher
DH - Swisher of Matsui

The team becomes younger, more athletic, better defense, better lineup. The pitching is a good mix of veterans and younger guys.

Also, if they can trade Matsui, the DH can be used to rest Posada from catching every day. Swisher can also play some OF and 1st base to rest the other regulars.
