Yankee GM Brian Cashman had dinner Wednesday night with Scott Boras (the agent picked up the tab), and discussed four clients in particular: Derek Lowe, Mark Teixeira, Oliver Perez Oliver Perez and Manny Ramirez. It is probably in that order that the Yanks have interest.

For now, the Yanks' baseball operations department has minimal interest in Ramirez.

There continues to be buzz about Robinson Cano going to the Dodgers, with Russell Martin or Matt Kemp being players of interest for the Yankees. But Yankee officials say it is much more likely Cano will remain their second baseman next year.

I'm not sure if I even believe all the rumors about Martin being available because he's one of the top catchers in the game. Short of maybe Joe Mauer, there's not a possible up-grade out there.

But since the name came up, I'll toss around some thoughts. A) Where would Martin play if he came here? Third base is, obviously, very occupied by A-Rod so the Yankees have to be looking at him as a catcher, which would mean that Jorge Posada would be pushed out from behind the plate to first base full time. That move won't make him very happy, as he has insisted a few times that he will be ready to be behind the plate when the new Yankee Stadium opens and that is where he wants to be. There's also the possibility that Posada could be moved. I'm not sure what the trade market would be for him. On one hand, he has been one of the most productive catchers over the past decade. On the other hand, he is getting older now and coming off a very short season due to injury, though not likely an injury that is likely to be a recurring thing. The offer for Posada would be a little less than it might be in other years because he's coming off that injury but he would still likely be an up-grade for a lot of teams at the catcher position. The Yankees would probably have to eat a lot of that contract that they gave him, though. It would make the team younger and more athletic, as Brian Cashman has said he wants to do but catcher is not a major area of need this off-season. Like the writer said, the Yankees will kick the tires on the idea but I don't see it happening.
