The Rule 5 draft is a Major League Baseball player draft that occurs each year in December, at the annual Winter Meeting of general managers. The Rule 5 draft aims to prevent teams from stockpiling too many young players on their minor league affiliate teams when other teams would be willing to have them play in the majors. The Rule 5 Draft is named for its place in the The Official Professional Baseball Rules Book. The June Rule 4 draft, known as simply "the draft" or the "amateur draft", is a distinctly different process in which teams select high school and college players.

Not a bad move by Cashman.

yeah nice move. yankees took this kid Jamie Hoffmann with the pick from the dodgers organization. he got some time in the big leagues last year. plays outfield, bats right handed, hits lefties well and above average defensively. he should compete for a spot on the bench next season.

And don't forget; he's a hockey player at heart. He was drafted by the Hurricanes in 2003.

C'mon, Tony. The Rule 5 Draft is between the Rule 4 Draft and the rule 6 Draft. Page 337, article IV, Official MLB Rulebook.
