This is who we need.

I say "try" to shore up our D and save our money for next summer.

He is the kind of wheels and hands that can compliment Gomez. I would trade any 3 with a 1st rounder of Sanguinnetti, Cherepanov, Dawes, Callahan, Prucha. None of them will be as good as Gaborik.

You know whats scary? Gaborik is only 26.

Cherepanov has the potential to be better than Gaborik. I don't trade him away.

Have you read the latest scouting reports on him? He just hangs around the neutral zone and doens't play any defense, may not adapt to the physical game, and may never reach his hype. Pavel Brendl anyone?

Gaborik is a 30 goal scorer in a system that preaches defense first, sound familiar?

Cherepanov may be 2 to 3 years away if he ever reaches his potential. We need someone to play with Gomez now. Every year we wait to give him a sniper, is one less good year behind him.

Potential is the key word here. Which means he may or may NOT reach stardom. Gaborik on the other hand is already a scoring machine.

I still don't trade him. Defense can be taught, Cherepanov has the potential to be a Malkin clone. If you want Gaborik that badly, wait till he becomes a UFA.

Cherepanov won't be a Malkin clone. CHerepanov doesn't have the size Malkin and Ovechkin have to physically dominate. We would be lucky if he could be a Kovaluchuk, but that is a stretch too. He was extremely overhyped, and there is a reason why many teams passed on him. He has a horrible work ethic and is perpetually lazy (Jagr anyone?)

If we wait on Gaborik for another year for UFA, then we will have to overpay to get him. If Jagr comes back, then we are going to have to win a cup NOW, With Gaborik that is possible. But with the likes of Shanahan, Malone, or Laraque eating up that possible money, then it will not happen.

Minnesota has a lot of important free agents to sign, like Rolston and Burns. If we can give them an enticing offer of a few players like Callahan and Dawes/Prucha, then throw in a chip like Cherepanov, then it would be golden. We can ask for conditional pick if Gaborik signs with another team if your worried about that. Remember the winner of the deal is the team who gets the bests player. Look at the Pittsburgh trade for Hossa. Everyone said that would mess up there chemistry, well what it did was get them to the finals.

Cherepanov's work ethic still got him to break Bure's and Ovechkin's goal record. So how lazy can he be?

And he still has room to grow. Malkin is only 190 lbs. Cherepanov can easily surpass that weight to 200 lbs. And the reason why teams passed on him was because of the transfer agreement. Which is funny because if I remember correctly you were on his nuts and begging for us to draft him... Razzer

But hey if we can get Gaborik without giving up Cherry, Sangs, and Anisimov that would be traffic. I'd throw in two first rounders also considering our team should be in contention with the King in net.

Well considering where we were at and what was on the board. Hell even Piere McGuire thought it was a great pick.

Don't hold yourself so high on that record, its only 17 goals. He only got 26 points this past season, which is only 2 points better than some guys like Pavel Brendle. All the scouting reports say he can't handle the physical game.

Malkin may be only 195, but he has a 6 foot 3 frame. Whereas Cherapanov only has a 6 foot 1 scale. Hell compare him to a prospect in our system, Anisimov and he looks like a twig.

I'm saying if we can get a talent like Gaborik, for the likes of Cherapanov and two role players like Callahan and Dawes, it should be done in a heartbeat. But to hold him back would be dumb.

Say Cherepanov grows another inch or two. He could also be 6 foot 2, 200 lbs type player which isn't bad.

I don't want to trade both cally and dawes. If I could trade a 1st rounder plus dawes, 2nd tier prospect, Prucha, that wouldn't be too shabby.

Yeah, I actually agree. Gaborik is one of the great pure talents in the NHL. With the right linemates, he could really explode. I recall him being kinda streaky, but it's hard to gauge any player's performance when they're in Minnesota.

Cherepanov is a completely unproven commodity at best. Gaborik has already shown the ability to not only play , but play well at the NHL level.
That trade is a such no brainer, Slats would throw in Cherepanov,Dawes, Prucha, and a first round pick.....and Minnestoa would laugh in his face.
