Shanahan has had enough of waiting for sather to see what or if anything was going to happen and he's looking to take other offers now from other teams.
Now aside from people not wanting him here and some who did , i gotta say sather was just being a basterd about the stiuation , it was 1 thing to make him wait and "maybe" sign him but he has dragged this on WAYYYYY too long you couldn't expect the guy to wait forever.
The New York Post reports that Brendan Shanahan is putting himself on the open market after the Rangers were not able to clear cap space or a roster spot for the 39-year-old winger.
"I've told Rick [Curran] that I can no longer wait and that it's time to move on," Shanahan, referring to his agent. "Until now, Rick has been under instructions to tell inquiring teams that my focus was on re-signing with the Rangers, and that I was not accepting any other offers. That has changed."
I certainly am very curious to see how well he does in this league right now. I do wish him the best of luck wherever he winds up. He's definitely going to have something to prove to Sather, that's for sure.
Even though I didn't want Shanahan back this year, I don't think it was right the way Sather left him hanging in limbo like that. Sather should have let him know definitively one way or the other before the season started. Anyway, best of luck to Shanny wherever he ends up.
I guess when Sather used up all his cap space, he was telling Shanny politely that he didn't want him back. Putting Rismiller on waiver probably was the effort to sign him but noone claimed him. So good luck Shanny.
I'm all for bashing Sather, but I can't fault him on this. The handwriting was on the wall, Shanny should have figured this out weeks ago. If the Rangers really wanted him that bad, he would have been at camp with a contract. Instead he waits it out with a bunch of ifs and maybes? He should have known better.
I LOVED Shanahan for his grit like I LOVED Messier but both were done their last season in NY. It's painful to watch the great ones decline but if an organization is going to win they have to look forward. There's not one forward I'd sit for Shanahan unless he's willing to play on the 4th line.

Agreed. It's not like he's some kid who doesn't have a clue.
Based on all I've heard, not being behind the scenes, I think Sather handled this classlessly.
Personally, I wanted Shanny back, but I admit that I'm one of his biggest fans. However, if one wants to say Shanny's done, fine, that's an opinion. If that was Glen Sather's opinion, and I think by now it's obvious it was, he should have extended the courtesy to Brendan to tell him about a month ago. And don't give me this stuff about how Shanny "should have known". Hey, Brendan WANTED to be a Ranger, and he proved that with actions by waiting for Slats to extend an offer. Don't we want guys who WANT to be here?
If Sather had no designs on signing Shanny, he should have made his decision known to Brendan a month ago.
Didn't Shanny turn down a camp tryout offer?? How many times did he have to be told;"We'll get back too you", before it registered that it just wasn't going to happen? Almost everything Sather does, he does it in a classless manor(unless it involves Mess), nothing earthshattering there. Maybe he thought telling Shanny the check is in the mail was an easier letdown than we just don't want you anymore. You know, it's not you, it's me.
On the surface, a "camp tryout" offer sounds like Sather was not the bad guy, but let's not forget some key details: what would the conditions of the tryout be? Would Shanahan be covered by insurance? Would he have to pay for his own injury insurance? If the answers are NO and YES, then why should he pay for his own insurance, and what happens to him if he gets seriously injured in practice and has no medical coverage? Sather's alleged "offer" may not be as simple as it seems to us.
And Knicksfan, we don't know what Sather did, or did not tell Brendan privately (I guess that's why it's "private"). However, if Sather told him privately to get lost, I cannot imagine a future HOF'er with Shanny's pride level would still be hanging around the Rangers nest like a jilted groupie would for a rock star.
I'm embarassed at how Sather handled the situation with Shanny. I mean if you weren't going to sign the guy why didn't you let him know? Shanny wanted to resign with us and this is how you treat him...
I appluad Sather for turning around our organization but he handles these kinds of things classlessly

That still doesn't make it right. For the few seasons that he was here, Shanahan was very productive, provided excellent veteran leadership on and off the ice, he always put the team first, and is an all-around good guy. Considering all of that, the least that Sather could have done was to give Shanny a definitive answer one way or the other before the season started. Like I said before, I didn't want Shanny back because we needed to get a younger and faster player in his place. But I don't like the way it was handled by Sather.
