Apparently, Avery's silence has been quite noticable for the last several games as he hasn't been fielding any questions from reporters after games. He just gets dressed, and heads for the door. Many people are attributing his recent silence to his displeasure at not having a new contract with the Rangers as well as the prospect of impending free agency. A lot on his mind, I guess. The good thing is that it certainly isn't adversely affecting his play on the ice. Aside from the game against the Kings, Avery has been all over the ice, not only doing the things he usually does, but he's been putting pucks in the net as well. My personal opinion is that the Rangers will get a new contract done with him some time soon. We would be stupid not to because Avery belongs here. In the meantime, I would think Renney and/or Sather should have a chat with him to put his mind at ease.

I agree. And it's like they're somehow jerking Avery around. As if he still has to prove something. I don't like that. The man clearly loves playing in new york, has been for the most part the same player he was last year. If I'm Sather, I sign him today. |

couldnt agree more..this reminds me of last year when Sather called out Avery for being a detriment to the team after going through arbitration..do you think there are still some lingering effects? The fact that Sean is being silent and nothing seems to be being worked on contractually, could point to bad things. Silence is sometimes far worse than expressing things verbally. Let's hope for the best. |

Excuse me but what makes you think that they are jerking him around? Do you have knowledge that they haven't offered him a new contract that perhaps he has turned down? He started not talking to the press after the worst game of the year, for him, vs L.A. and made a comment within earshot of LB about how no one would sign him in the summer because of the poor season he's had and Glen Sather told him that he wanted to sign him ... I know that it is not the popular thing to speak ill about Avery but until the last few games he's been a major disappointment this season and everyone excuses it because of the injuries and such when they aren't willing to make the same consessions about other players on the team ... I want Sean Avery signed as much as the next person because I think that when he is healthy and involved in the game as he has been lately that he is very valuable to us even if he doesn't get a point BUT I am also not blinded by that to see that he has faults and that what he has done this season is not going to get him the contract he had originally wanted to get last summer ... The bottom line is that we don't know why he is pouting, as long as it doesn't affect the team he can continue to not talk to the press, I don't really care as long as he isn't behaving in the same manner toward his teammates ... However we don't know anything about WHY he's really acting this way and to put it on the team/Sather as being their fault for not resigning him when there is no proof to suggest anything of the sort either way is jumping the gun ... How about Holding Sean Avery responsible for his juvenile behavior? |

well aside from the fact that your statement is a bit contradictory and confusing to say the least, its obvious that no one knows for sure..we never know what goes on behind the scenes..we merely go off of what we read, what the beat writers say, and the player's on-ice performance.. One 'could' be lead to believe that he is being jerked around based off of his recent attitude. But if indeed he is NOT getting 'jerked' around, I think the abnormality of his recent routine antics and attitude, or should I say lack thereof, can get the attention of any fan. The fact that he hasnt been acting like the Sean Avery we know off the ice could lead many to believe that there is something up. Of course we dont know, but being scolded for thinking that it could be something exponentially bad is a bit unfair. It is, after all, Sean Avery. In regard to your comment about us fans not being willing to concede about the mishaps, lack of performance, and attitude of other players..uhh..do you read these boards?..if I hear the words 'Malik effing schucks' one more time, his name will lose meaning..same can be said for the ousting of Hossa constantly on these boards and the offensive incapabilities of Ryan Hollweg..so I think we all have a certain willingness to point out others when they are doing poorly. The difference here is that Avery is a difference maker and I personally feel that he needs to revert back to his old self off the ice because sooner or later it will affect his on-ice play whether you believe that or not..Again, I dont know wahts going on, but it doesnt seem right and that is my opinion. I think we all have a right to that. |

Avery's been playing REAL well, providing offense, scoring and passing the puck around, as well as the intangibles he brings to the game and does so well. The physical play, the intimidation, crashing the net, always yapping, getting under opponent's skin, causing a major distraction and getting the other team's best players off their game. The most hated player in the league; the kind of guy you HATE to play against but LOVE to have on your team; the guy who P.O.'d an entire country, Canada. One of the Rangers' BEST players and most effective; Rangers fans LOVE him. I think a lucrative new contract will be a done deal very shortly, following the extensions given to Lundqvist, Gerardi and Tyutin. It would be a HUGE mistake to allow Avery to test the free agent market, there would be a lot of interest. He MUST be resigned and stay with the Rangers, he's a joker, a wild card, and I'd HATE to play against him. And, no, I'm not Sean Avery's agent...

I am sorry but I was very clear and didn't contradict myself and do read these boards or otherwise I wouldn't of commented on the fact that Avery gets a pass but others don't ... and I could care less for the line of bull of he makes an impact whereas Malik, Hossa dont ... Does Jagr make an impact? Do Shanny, Gomez, Drury, Henrik? They all do and yet they have ALL been blasted at one point or another this season and I've yet to see much complaining about Avery's poor season ... So as you can see I do pay attention ...
Nothing that's been posted in the papers would leave me to the conclusion that Avery is being jerked around by the team ... In fact reports from the Post is that Sather wants Avery back, reports from the Post is that Avery is down on himself for his poor season and his rash of injuried and NOT because he is supposedly being led around by the nose by Sather ... As you have your right to your opinion I have a right to state mine and I don't need to be told that it seems like I am scolding anyone because that's not what I was doing ... |

I don't think you were scolding or being condescending at all. In fact, you bring up a lot of good points. The one thing that does seem bothersome to me is how you end with talking about holding sean responsible for juvenile behavior. Well, what exactly is juvenile about it? Save for the comment heard by Brooks, the man has been quiet and relatively professional as of late. Maybe this is a new Sean Avery we're seeing. The one who does all the talking ON the ice. Perhaps he felt that his mouth wasn't going to help him with his play or the contract negotiations, so he opted to switch up his MO, with great results on the ice by the way.
Secondly, I don't think it's fair to say that Avery has been a 'major disapointment' this season. He's been injured for the majority of it, and when he has played, he's been effective. He did have 2 or 3 terrible games, but who hasn't on this team? I don't think his play of late is a fluke, rather a sign that Sean is finally healthy, motivated, and wiser than before. Someone who's been a major disappointment to me would be Ryan Callahan, who was invisible for the better part of 20,23 games. Obviously his play seemingly has come around too. To end the post, I'll say that obviously, I don't know exactly what is going on with the guy, but Avery's contract SEEMS to have been a distraction before the season even started, and it may be wiser to just wrap it up before the playoffs come around. But to your credit, I have been working full time and going for my RN, so it's tough for me to keep up with everything that comes out of our team's players' mouths. I just know that Sean loves being a Ranger, and in my eyes, deserves a contract as soon as possible. But what do I know? Sather's been doing this for 2 decades and maybe he's a mad genius. Avery's play as of late hasn't been hurt by any of this and perhaps it was the spark he needed to fully motivate him. Great, now i'm rambling... |

Snow, obviously all players make an impact to some degree. But the impact that Sean Avery has on a game is more noticable than any other player on the ice (with the exception of Hank). The presence of Avery really changes the dynamics of the team and it was noticable from the first day he arrived. He gives the team a much-needed shot of energy and feistiness, which also gets the opposing team off of their game a bit as well. Regarding him being down on himself about his injuries and lack of productivity, that could very well be the case. And that's another thing I love about Avery, is that he goes out on the ice and DOES something about it. Just look at the way he has been playing lately, like a man on a mission. It's a beautiful thing. |
