Come on,No More 1940. That was in bad taste. Poor Doris couldn't help herself suffering from emphezema for years, ultimately dying from cancer.

She was a heavy smoker, she did it to herself. Sorry, but I have no sympathy for someone who damages their health by smoking...
What! I'm sorry, but I find your attitude disturbing. We all have our vices. Did you know her personally? If not, just how did you know how many packs she smoked per day? Late in her life, there was a TV segment I remember seeing centering around the most frequent WFAN callers and she was included. I also remember reading that Doris unfortunately had a tissue disorder that affected her skin and left her looking most unappealing. From what I was told she lived alone for many years. Nevertheless, she remained quite personable, albeit a tough listen due to her illnesses. Hopefully she has found peace.

Big Grin
Big Laugh Big Laugh The fellow you were referring to was the Late Pete Franklin. He was 'King' out in Cleveland's WWWE,but surprisingly never connected successfully in NYC. One thing is certain,Pete was funny as hell and knew his stuff.I'll never forget his warranted sandbagging, stripdown and exposure of newbie dummy at the time,Chris Russo after inviting him into the studio. It was hilarious! When Don Imus was out in Cleveland Pete and he were like nitro and glycerin. Their disdain for each other moved due east to Kaufman Astoria Studios. Ironically, when WFAN moved down the dial from 1050AM-660AM,Pete and Don were standing side by side conducting the moment of the switch. Near the end of his tenure in NY,Pete used to scream out on the air;"I'll conduct my show as I damn well please! If you don't like it,FIRE ME! FIRE ME! FIRE ME! If you don't,I'll continue to stash the $$$ into 'The Pete Franklin Retirement Fund'". Unfortunately for Pete, the flow stopped shortly thereafter and the station obeyed his plea.

Ahh, Pete Franklin; Matzohs by Streit's and beverages by Hoffman. Also, I grew up across the street from the Kaufman Studios in Astoria. Go figure...
No,Isles1972,Streits(not Mark)and Hoffmans were JOE Franklin's radio and TV(WOR 9)sponsors. Joe's show revolved around nostalgic music and show business. Perhaps you don't remember Pete, the sports maven.

Listen, I'm sorry if you were offended by my previous remark. I have nothing against Doris from Rego Park. I thought she was an interesting and knowledgable caller, and seemed like a nice lady. It's SMOKING that I object to. The NUMBER ONE KILLER in America is smoking related illnesses. Totally preventable. You know I read a poll which discovered virtually NONE of the big tobacco company executives smoke themselves. What does that tell you? It tells me they're heartless, unconscionable SCUM peddling death to make a buck. Millions, make that billions of bucks as a matter of fact. At the expense of damaging other people's health and costing other people their lives.
A close friend and co-worker of mine (a heavy smoker) recently was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away a few months ago. About a year before he died, his adult son stumbled out of a bar one night and stepped in front of a passing car, which struck and killed him. Now I just found out my friend's wife (also a heavy smoker), who had just been diagnosed with lung cancer herself, passed away too. There's a whole family that was wiped out by smoking and drinking, in just over a year's time. You say "We all have our vices"; well I DON'T. I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't use drugs and I don't gamble.
If you smoke, QUIT. If you drink, drink in moderation. If you can't, you must stop drinking altogether. That's what I had to do. I've been sober 17 years, but like I tell people, before that I was drunk for 17 straight years. I don't miss it. You only get one life, and life is too good to throw it away on that garbage. I hope to live at least another 54 years so that maybe I will see my Rangers win another Stanley Cup Championship...

Very well said,NoMore1940. I sympathyze with your unpleasant experiences and losses as well as your disdain for those heartless maggots who's only regard for life revolves around financial success at the expense of perpetrating suicide. I must correct you in one respect however.Like The Late Doris Braun, you did have a vice, that through your inner strength was defeated. Again,I appreciate and understand your disdain for tobacco salesmen and those who fill their pockets. That said,it is quite possible Doris also defeated her vice also long before she passed away. Do you know otherwise? Whatever the case may be,stay strong my good man and keep on post'n!!!

Just curious. Can ANYONE enlighten/encourage me as to ANY sign of improvement IN ANY SINGLE FACET OF HIS GAME, of our number one draft pick of last June.

Anyone?

Buellar? Buellar?

The kid is driven to succeed and excel, but the answer unfortunately is an emphatic NO!!! I do not want to hear excuses(He is only 19!). We all understandably expected more to his Game! Aside from scoring some garbage goals earlier in the season,John has disturbingly shown very little! Frowner

Quite frankly,Red,I don't know what this kid can provide at the NHL level right now. He shows absolutely nothing on his shifts! I am sick over it!

As a fan, I too am sick. Funny but I remember when Bailey first came up. He didn't do a hell of alot BUT you could see a promise, even if it was limited, of a player who could get better, and he has but Tavares looks so utterly like a potential fourth line winger. I mean, there are allegedly less talented youngsters on this team that show more. Much more. This isn't a slump my friend. He's been outted!

Allegedly is the word,Red. No doubt John has great hands and was able to use them extraordinarily effectively in the OHL. He ain't in the OHL anymore!! Never did I expect his skating to be so atrocious. He simply cannot get from point A to point B quickly or strongly enough to play in this League currently! God I hope I am wrong, but where is there light?? I can't even find the G-d Damn Tunnel!!!! To think,I was so fearful that Snow was going to select Duchene last June!! Looking back, how the heck did this kid manage to score 17 goals earlier in the season?? See Stars Frowner

Again; patience, my friends. We are now at THAT point where we root for the team to lose. We got a pt vs the Blues last night, but Toronto won.
Here are some facts as of this morning:
Duchene 23g 24a 47pts
Tavares 18g 18a 36pts
********************************
Stamkos 08/09 23g 23a 46pts
Stamkos 09/10 (today) 42g 38a 80pts
*******************************
1st NHL Season
Patrick Kane 21g 51a 72pts
Jon Toews 24g 30a 54pts
Vin Lecavalier (!!!) 13g 15a 28pts
*******************************
And remember, the above players (except for Duchene this season) originally played on horrible, non-playoff teams in their first years.
Patience.....

Patience isn't the issue here,my friend. John shows absolutely NO significant skill. Not a trace!!! I am absolutely shocked and find it hard to believe he can elevate his level to the height it needs to be,in order to achieve what was expected of him. Being one here who campaigned passionately for his drafting,I am beginning to feel like a fool. Hopefully next season I will appear to be a fool for expressing this. That surely doesn't look promising unfortunately.

Great pts man and yes these players all played for team Usa,except vinny.
Also look at the players along Stamkos, are you like kidding me?Taveres has weight, who else?
19 year old rookie.
Black hawks are loaded.
This year's Islander team should be titled....
"Where are we going" by Dave matthews?
or We need a Capt sir...No leadership.

I understand your concerns and also share the horrifying possibility that he might be a bust.
But remember some of the old posts from last season where we made fun of Tampa and all those "Got Stamkos" billboards because he was perceived to be a drifting, unmotivated, over-matched stiff?
And I also remember Lecavalier's first season and he was also written off.....another Lawton....another Scissons. Just another "dumb move" by a "clueless" Tampa franchise, if I remember.
Tavares has a pedigree that put us on the bandwagon last year. He does well in big games and can carry the team. I don't forget that. And I'd love to see us in 'a big game,' but not this season....
I can't see that being blown up because of a rookie year on a small, young team heading towards the depth of the NHL. And again, he's a kid.
It took a while for the mold to form in Chicago and LA, but it's starting to take hold there. We now know their names.
Another good draft pick and a FA or two and we'll be alright (If Snow/Wang can and will spend to get us off the salary cap floor).

I don't deny John's desire, anticipation and knowledge of the Game. What concerns me,unlike early flashes shown by Stamkos and the other players you mentioned,is the evident lack of overall physical skills Tavares needs to complement the mental ones. I pray he eventually can find them, but his upside would have to be enormous in order to get it done.
